01Best Diesel Cars: 2018 Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback
The Cruze diesel gets the best gas mileage of any non-hybrid and non-electric car: a whopping 52 MPG on the highway. It is roomy enough for your family and luggage. It looks sharp and sleek too.
022018 Mazda 6
It is nearly unheard of to find a luxury vehicle for $36K, and yet, here we are. The Mazda 6 comes with SUV tires for enhanced quiet, gas mileage (33 MPG on the highway), and durability––and goes from zero to 60 in just 6 seconds.
03Best Diesel Trucks: 2018 Ford F-150
The Ford F-150 is one of the best selling vehicles in America for a reason: it’s an all-around terrific truck. The diesel version is even better, and it is quiet, and quite a powerful rig: one reviewer drove the vehicle and got “13.5 mpg indicated while towing a 5,500-pound horse trailer 90 miles through the rolling hills outside Denver at the 55-mph speed limit.” Pretty impressive to me!
042018 Ram 1500
The turbodiesel engine on this impressive rig gets 21 MPG in the city and 27 MPG on the highway, all while providing the smoothest ride of any truck you’ll ever drive. It can haul up to 1,880 pounds and tow up to 10,640 pounds––more than enough for a weekend adventure or DIY project. The roomy cab even fits up to six people comfortably––even adults with long legs.
05Best Diesel SUVs: 2018 Jaguar F-Pace
Finally, a Jaguar you just might be able to afford! It drives like the sporty legacy you would expect from its creator and gets a respectable 26 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. It also comes standard with a power liftgate.
062018 Land Rover Range Rover Velar
While this vehicle is a little pricier than the first SUV on our list, it comes with some very futuristic features that make it worth the price, like retracting door handles, a panoramic glass roof, and a top-notch entertainment system. It gets similar gas mileage to the Jaguar F-Pace, though it only gets an average of 30 MPG on the highway.
072018 Jeep Grand Cherokee
This is a Jeep with serious swag: we’re talking blacked-out 20-inch wheels, leather seats, a heated steering wheel and a power rear liftgate. It gets 27 MPG on the highway, so you can cruise around with style all day or night long and never have to refuel.
08Bargain Buy: 2018 GMC Terrain
At a much lower price point than the other SUVs on this list and a crazy-high gas mileage of 39 MPG in the highway, there’s very little not to love about the GMC Terrain. It’s a compact SUV that packs a big punch with its power liftgate and remote start. As a bonus perk, the front seat folds down flat, in case you’d like to keep your kayak seated next to you on your next cross-country voyage.
Best Diesel Cars in America
In June of 2018, Audi chief executive Rupert Stadler was arrested for an automotive scandal that rocked the world. In 2015, Volkswagen and several of the brands they control were caught installing illegal software on diesel-powered engines. This tinkering helped over 11 million diesel vehicles pass emissions tests illegally when in reality, the engines’ pollution output was over 40 times the limit set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Since the scandal became public, several of the company’s executives have resigned or have been forced out. The controversy has cost the company billions of dollars, and their stock price still has not recovered.
Benefits of Diesel-Powered Vehicles
While “Dieselgate” gave certain companies a bad reputation they may never recover from, you should not discount diesel-fuelled vehicles entirely. Diesel vehicles generally get better fuel economy, saving you money at the pump and time spent on frequent fill-ups. Most diesel vehicles, unlike VW’s, have lower CO2 emissions than gasoline vehicles, in addition to having reduced maintenance costs. And of course, as any truck driver knows, diesel engines have much higher torque, allowing you to pull much heavier loads than you ever could with a gasoline-powered engine.
If you are looking to give diesel a try, here are eight great vehicles to consider, all approved by the EPA:
