Thank You Letter Following a Campus Interview

college student

The most important reason to send a thank you letter after an on-campus interview is a selfish one--it's a great chance to remind the interviewer of your interest and it can the difference between an offer and a rejection.

Importance of the Thank You Letter

Employers simply expect a thank you note and if you don't comply, it leaves a negative impression. According to a CareerBuilder survey noted on FastCompany.com, 22% of employers are less likely to hire a candidate who doesn't send a thank-you note after the interview.

Fifty-six percent stated that skipping the thank-you note shows the candidate isn’t serious about the job, and an astounding 86% think that skipping the thank you note indicates a lack of follow-through. Not the kind of impression you want to make!

What a Thank You Letter Accomplishes

A thank you letter shows that you are interested in and excited about the job, that you follow through on your goals, and that you are polite and respectful of other people's time. Remember, an employer is not required to interview you and may have taken extra time out of his day and skipped lunch or stayed late to do so.

Compose the thank you letter the same day of the interview while details are still fresh in your mind. That way you can restate some of the conversation or capitalize on a detail that you might not remember a day later. Be specific so that the letter sounds personal. Send the thank you letter within 24 hours of the interview so it will arrive before a decision is made; it will refresh the interviewer's memory about your meeting while also showing that you are proactive and diligent.
