There are a lot of investors who currently utilize oil ETFs to play the oil sector. It's one of the most popular commodities and/or sectors outside of gold. So oil ETFs are an easy way to invest in oil without stocking barrels in your backyard.

One of the best advantages of ETFs is the ability to enter certain markets or invest in certain commodities without loading up on equities or battling index basket pricing.

Instead, you can get instant exposure with one transaction (long or short). And there are many tax advantages as well.

However, for those who like to play oil to the short side or even just want to have an investment inverse to the price of oil as a hedge, then this is the perfect list. There are both short oil ETFs and ETNs for your consideration...

So right now we have a half dozen funds and a pair of notes as well. However, as more funds (or notes) come to market or if any are delisted or redeemed, I'll be sure to update this list, so check back often.

And to see all of the Oil ETFs available, look no further than my list of oil ETFs. Or if you want to see some inverse funds, I have a list of inverse ETFs, too.

However, please realize that utilizing inverse ETFs (or ETNs) as part of your portfolio is an advanced investing strategy, and is not for the feint of heart (or beginning investors).

So as with any investment, a company stock, index, or any of the ETPs on this list, please make sure you thoroughly research these products (or any financial asset) before making any trades. Conduct your due diligence, watch how these funds react to different market conditions, take a look under the hood and see what is in the funds. And if you have any questions or concerns, make sure you consult a stockbroker, a financial advisor, or another financial industry professional.

But if you are adopting advanced strategies and you are a trader who likes to play both leveraged and inverse funds, out of the products listed above, there are four short oil ETFs and ETNs that are leveraged as well.

Again, leveraged and inverse funds are for investors who have advanced trading skills and it's crucial to understand the risks when buying and selling these funds and notes.

Crucial. While ETFs have many advantages, they have many disadvantages as well (as does any investment). So it is very important to understand the investment vehicle before you trade it. But once you have a full understanding of these short oil ETFs (and the leveraged ones, too), you can consider adding these and more to your portfolio. And of course as always, good luck with all of your trades!
