36B - Financial Management Technician

If you are interested in receiving training in the area of finances, accounting, budget reporting, and spend your day in an office environment, the MOS 36B Financial Management Technician is a great stepping stone to further training as an accountant or financial planner when in the civilian world.  Often additional training, leadership opportunities, and educational opportunities present themselves to those in the Army with the aptitude and desire for advanced programming.

 Below is a list of attributes and interests you should have before considering this career path and training:

Helpful attributes include:

  • Interest in mathematics, statistics, bookkeeping and accounting may be helpful
  • Ability to work with numbers, organize paperwork, and safeguard money
  • Interest in operating office machines such as computers, power point projectors, printers, copy machines.
  • Interest in work that requires perfect "to the penny" accuracy

The finance management technician is responsible for receiving and post funding, handling commitment and obligations documents as well as accounting and budget systems. The 36B will receive and process treasury checks for payment. Maintain disbursing files and prepare periodic financial reports. Being a finacial management technician requires you to receive, review, prepare and compute travel vouchers as well as receive, review, and process pay documents.

The 36B will also receive and review contracts, invoices and receiving reports. Other duties of the financial management technician is to prepare payment vouchers in accordance with various government regulations and perform duties as cashier.

Training Information

Job training for a financial management technician requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and nine weeks of Advanced Individual Training with on-the-job instruction for accounting techniques.

Some of the skills you’ll learn are:

  • Accounting principles and procedures
  • Maintenance of financial reports and budgets
  • Analyzing financial data
  • Computation of pay and deductions

ASVAB Score  - The Army Composite Scores for the Financial Management Technician are:

  • Clerical (CL) - Determined from Verbal Expression (VE), Arithmetic Reasoning (AR), and Mathematics Knowledge (MK).
  • Required: 101 in aptitude area CL.  

Security Clearance: None though a debt background check is required due to the large amounts of money that is managed in the office on a typical day.

Other Requirements

  • No record of conviction of any crime involving moral turpitude
  • No record of any information which might adversely reflect against the character, honesty, or integrity of the soldier
